Romania’s wine industry has changed enormously over the last few years. Still one of Europe’s largest wine producers (position number 6), it has benefited enormously from EU subsidies ( over 70m Euros since 2002) which have been spent on vineyards and new equipment. Undoubtedly the quality of wines has improved as a result. At the same time local tastes are changing and the emergence of a new aspirational professional and middle class has allowed the development of several exciting premium wines and wineries.
